Background

In all democratic countries, the future role of the media as an avenue for such democratic accountability is threatened by a myriad of technological and political changes. In that environment, highest levels of strategic and operational skill and competence in media management competences become the critically important success factor for the survival of independent media organizations, and – as such – for the healthy development of democracy.

The winner of the Fellowship will receive up to 50 percent reduction of the full CEU Executive MBA tuition of EUR 29.000. The fellowship will be awarded to a professional working in a broadly understood media/creative sector, working for an organization with a proven record of contributing to open and honest public debate.

Applicant Profile

Applicant should have at least 8 years of professional experience, including at least 3 years of documented leadership/managerial experience, an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification and who apply for the August 2023 intake of the CEU Executive MBA program via the regular application form.

“It’s been said that where the press is free, all is safe. The CEU Executive MBA ‘Press Freedom’ Fellowship seeks an accomplished media executive who has dedicated their professional life to media freedom and choice,” points out Prof. Maciej Kisilowski, Faculty Director of CEU Executive MBA.

About the Committee to Protect Journalists

The Committee to Protect Journalists promotes press freedom worldwide and defends the right of journalists to report the news safely and without fear of reprisal. CPJ protects the free flow of news and commentary by taking action wherever journalists are under threat.

As an organization founded by journalists, they use the tools of journalism to protect those engaged in acts of journalism. Their credibility rests on a bedrock of accuracy, transparency, fairness, accountability, and independence. Journalist safety is our top priority.

CPJ believes freedom of expression is the foundation for all other human rights. Violations of press freedom often occur in a broader context — including discrimination and oppression based on political beliefs, race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, and socio-economic standing. As enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, every person has the right to freedom of opinion and of expression, regardless of their nationality or identity. Access to independent information enables all people to make decisions and hold the powerful to account.

CPJ is committed to values of equity and free expression in our internal practices as well. As an organization headquartered in the United States, they aspire to build a diverse workplace, and to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment. As an international organization, they strive for our people to be representative of the global community on which they report, and to equip them with the opportunities and resources they need to learn and succeed.
